The Spiritual Essence of Nam Hong Siang Theon’s Zhongyuan Festival

The rituals performed during the Zhongyuan Festival are not just symbolic. They carry generations of Chinese values — filial piety, compassion, charity, and gratitude.

At Nam Hong Siang Theon, each ceremony within our Zhongyuan Festival is rooted in the guiding principles of:Giving (施), Filial Piety (孝), and Virtue (善). We believe this is not just a festival for the departed — but a moment for the living to reflect, give thanks, and uplift others.

icon Giving (施) – Offering to All, Delivering the Lost

The Fang Yan Kou ceremony is the most solemn and compassionate Buddhist ritual during the festival. Monks recite sutras, offer symbolic food and chant mantras to deliver wandering souls — the hungry ghosts (饿鬼道) — who suffer in unseen realms. These souls receive nourishment, refuge in the Dharma, and a path to peace.

The Five Blessings of Fang Yan Kou:

※ Nourishes deceased ancestors and kin

※ Frees sentient beings in all realms from suffering

※ Transfers merit to help them reincarnate into better paths

※ Soothes karmic enemies and unborn spirits through the power of prayer

※ Clears spiritual obstacles for devotees and brings health, peace, and longevity

This is not just giving — it’s the highest form of compassion: Giving to those who cannot repay.

icon Filial Piety (孝) – Honouring Ancestors, Continuing Grace

Zhongyuan Festival is also known as “The Festival of Gratitude” — and its roots lie in a Buddhist story of a son’s devotion to his mother. It has since been embraced by Taoist and Confucian communities alike as a powerful expression of ancestral respect and family responsibility.

Through prayers, offerings, and memorial tablets, devotees can:

※ Express love and remembrance for deceased loved ones

※ Accumulate blessings and peace for their family

※ Pass down values of gratitude and respect to children

※ Extend merit to karmic spirits and lost souls

Honouring our ancestors is how we ground ourselves in a fast-changing world.

icon Virtue (善) – Doing Good, Spreading Blessings

Nam Hong’s Zhongyuan Festival is more than a private ritual — it’s a chance to do good for society. All proceeds from the festival — including food offerings, blessing lamps, and tablet dedications — directly support the charitable work of Nam Hong Welfare Service Society.

Your contributions help us:

※ Offer free Traditional Chinese Medicine consultations to the public

※ Visit isolated seniors with care and festive support

※ Provide bursaries and school supplies for underprivileged children

※ Distribute essential groceries and medical aid to those in need.

When you give, you’re not just helping the departed — you’re helping the living, too.
